The bedrock throughout the reserve is dolerite. The soil layers are either a thin moraine cover or more or less massive peat layers. Because the dolerite’s flat upper surface is criss-crossed by fractures and hollows, a mosaic landscape has been created, with woodland covering the dryer parts and marshes covering the wetter parts.
