UNE­SCO (Uni­ted Nations Educa­tio­nal, Sci­en­ti­fic and Cul­tural Orga­ni­za­tion) is a UN body which was established in 1945. UNESCO’s pri­o­ri­ti­es inclu­de educa­tion for all, sci­ence to deve­lop the world, cul­tural diver­si­ty and heri­tage, and free­dom of speech and of the press. Swe­den is one of the major volun­ta­ry con­tri­bu­tors to UNE­SCO. All of UNESCO’s mem­ber sta­tes (195 countri­es) should have a natio­nal com­mis­sion which fun­c­tions as a link between UNE­SCO and orga­ni­sa­tions wit­hin the country. In Swe­den, the Swe­dish Natio­nal Com­mis­sion for UNE­SCO holds this position.
