Västerplana church was built in the 12th century, although some parts date from the 11th century. The tower was added slightly later.

The church acquired its present appearance when it was extended in the 18th century. This work was carried out by a local master stonemason, Per Jonsson, from Stenhammar. The medieval parts of the church, both the nave and chancel, are very well preserved.Straight ahead to the east is the original chancel with its stone altar, and in front of the altar is a preserved medieval window in the Romanesque style. The chancel contains a remarkable stone font that is believed to have been donated to Västerplana church by Bishop Bengt the Good in the 11th century.
