Platåbergens Geopark work to establish a UNESCO Global Geopark in the table mountains region of Västergötland. The envisioned geopark stretches over nine municipalities: Trollhättan, Vänersborg, Grästorp, Lidköping, Götene, Skara, Mariestad, Skövde, and Falköping. Grästorp municipality is the project owner.
Right now, work is underway to complete the 2019 application to become Sweden’s first UNESCO Global Geopark. Such a status would be a mark of quality and evidence that the natural environments around us are worthy of international attention. We hope that Platåbergens Geopark will help create a common identity in the region and help the local population feel increasingly proud of their local area.
The budget for the geopark is currently divided into two parts. The first part is the basic organisation, financed by Skaraborg’s and Fyrbodal’s municipal federations, the Culture Board and Reginal Development Board in Västra Götaland, LONA funds from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, and funds from various savings bank foundations.
The second part is the project “Storytelling in Platåbergen” with a total cost of 2.16 million SEK, of which the Rural Development Programme contributes with 65 %. The rest of the funds will come from participating municipalities and the savings bank foundations Åse-Viste, Lidköping, and Alfa.
